Invisalign® Frequently Asked Questions

Invisalign® Frequently Asked Questions

Even though Invisalign® teeth straighteners have been around for many years, some patients still ask us questions about them. At Jeff Colquitt, DDS in Dallas we can get you all the information you need and help you determine if Invisalign aligners are the right choice for you.

What is Invisalign®?

The Invisalign process is an alternative to traditional metal braces using clear plastic aligners. The aligners gently shift teeth into the correct position using a series of removable aligners. They are thin and clear, and fit comfortably over your teeth.

What are the Benefits?

Invisalign clear aligners are almost invisible, and most people won’t even notice you are wearing them. They can be easily removed for special occasions or when you want to eat, drink, brush, and floss. Invisalign aligners have no metal brackets or wires that won’t irritate your mouth.

How Long Does the Treatment Take?

Every patient is different and there are specific factors that need to be considered. The structure of your teeth, your responsiveness to the treatment, and how well you stick to the treatment plan, all affect how long it will take to complete treatment. In general, most clear brace treatments last between 10 months and 1.5 years.

Will Invisalign Affect My Speech?

During the first few days of wearing the clear aligners, you may experience increased saliva because your body is mistaking the aligners for food. This sensation usually wears off quickly and you will be able to speak normally and may not feel different when wearing Invisalign. Your mouth adjusts to the aligners in a short time and wearing the aligners is much less restrictive than other orthodontic treatments.

Will I Need to Wear a Retainer After Treatment?

We strongly recommend that everyone who has completed orthodontic treatment use a clear aligner at nighttime only. The clear aligner will prevent teeth from gradually shifting back towards their original position. Every case is different, and the final decision concerning what type of aligner or retainer to wear will be based on the unique factors of your lifestyle and oral health.
